January 2024: Iraq Teaching Day Update

The Conference Begins! Teaching Day Update

The day started bright and early for the NHTH Team at 6:30am local time (Iraq is 8 hours ahead of the US Eastern time zone) for the opening of the conference and the pre-conference workshops. Around 300 nurses from all over the area, including Mosul and Baghdad, are in attendance!
The conference is being sponsored by three Iraqi universities—Ninevah University, Tishk International University, and Hawler Medical University—as well as the Kurdish Ministry of Health and the new Nursing and Midwifery Development Centre. Deans from each university and representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, as well as other politicians, were all there for the opening, which was very exciting.
Anita’s pre-conference workshop on diabetes care went great! The workshop was well-attended and students were very engaged (you can see some of the students below). They especially appreciated the written resources we created—right before Anita passed around the handouts on how to check blood sugar levels, one of the nurses said that she felt bad that she didn’t have any written instructions for her patients to take home with them!
After the workshop, another nurse shared her appreciated for Anita’s emphasis on the importance of nurses knowing for themselves what they are asking their patients to do so that nurses are prepared to give their patients the knowledge and tools they need with, as the student phrased it, “kindness in how you share the message.” What a perfect way to capture the special nuance of how nurses work!
