The Nurses Heart to Heart team is heading home! At the writing of this update (Sunday afternoon, January 28th), they are on the final flight of their trip and will land back in Atlanta this evening. We received an update from Anita during their layover in Doha, Qatar last night:
“The conference was so wonderful. It is difficult to describe. We heard nurses and midwives sharing presentations from Iran, Iraq (Mosul, Baghdad, and Erbil) and Lebanon; from Switzerland and from Spain and from the US. The audience was made up of nursing students and nursing instructors and professors, and even deans of colleges.
“It was really moving to be in the same room with so many nurses from Kurdistan and the surrounding region. It is very humbling to work with these nurses, some of whom cannot always take for granted that they will be paid, but so many of them still come to work anyway. And to meet nurses who have lived through the horrors of the wars—to remember that they were living in those cities, like Baghdad and Mosul, that we heard about on the news so often… It’s very honoring and humbling to be able to be a part of building nursing as a profession here. We made many connections. We received many invitations to come back and teach all over the region. It was a fantastic trip and I cannot wait to return.”
