Our Work in Uganda

Nurses Heart to Heart’s first trip to Uganda was in April 2025. The NHTH team hosted three day-long teaching intensives for nurses and other healthcare providers. We trained a total of 145 participants, including 20 nursing instructors from 2 nursing schools! The teaching intensives covered hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases; each afternoon, we provided hands-on CPR and choking recovery training. NHTH visited nursing schools, hospitals, community clinics, and maternity hospitals. During these visits, we were able to train an additional 75 doctors, midwives, and nurses in CPR and choking recovery.

Our work in Uganda is in its early days and we are exploring several questions as we build this area of our work:

  • What can we as Nurses Heart to Heart do directly?

  • Who can we partner with to provide more help more consistently?

  • What local resources can we support and invest in?

  • How do we identify the investments that will make the greatest impact? How do we "triage" the needs we're seeing and the opportunities they present?

We're already collecting data from the two hospitals where Nurses Heart to Heart was able to donate fetal dopplers to see how these dopplers affect their infant mortality rates. And we're beginning to explore if and how we might provide virtual trainings to supplement in-person trips. Though only 15% of the population of Uganda has personal internet access and even then, it can be unreliable or too expensive to use, there are options. Stay tuned for more!
