Our Work in Tanzania

In 2021, Nurses Heart to Heart was part of a group of medical volunteers providing surgical repairs for children with congenital heart disease. The goal of the trip was to train surgeons, physicians, and nurses to safely provide pediatric cardiology surgeries in Tanzania—many of which were being done for the very first time in Tanzania. This was in partnership with the local organization The One New Heart Tanzania (TONHT).

In 2025, NHTH and TONHT began making plans for a new collaboration, this time focused on adult cardiology, diabetes, and maternal health. The goal of this new project, the first trip of which will take place in June 2026, is to have the NHTH team work alongside local partners in conducting community screenings for hypertension, diabetes, and malnutrition, with a particular focus on observation to help improve processes, efficiency, and accuracy in the screenings and patient follow-up. NHTH will also have two Certified Nurse Midwives on the team, who will partner with local midwives to provide prenatal healthcare alongside the screenings.

The 2026 trip will take place in Orkesumet, in the northeast of Tanzania, and in Sumbawanga, in the southwest. In addition to the trip itself, NHTH has been engaging in weekly training and mentorship calls with the leadership of TONHT on how to conduct effective and efficient health screenings and patient follow-up and resourcing.
