Thursday was another full day for the NHTH Team as they visited two schools of nursing and midwifery, as well as the Humble Vessel Clinic. Nurses Heart to Heart always donates our CPR teaching manikins and other tools to local nurses so that the training can continue after we head back to the States. Today was a really fun day delivering two of the three CPR manikin sets we brought to their new homes!
Long-time NHTH volunteer Jane took some time to share about the team's day:
"We've had another amazing, meaningful day. We started our day at Kampala University School of Nursing and Midwifery where one of our Ugandan colleagues, Professor Susan, teaches. Susan attended some of our classes and brought about 27 of her students to the Wednesday class. They were so excited to attend our classes and Susan was a great help with teaching infant CPR.
"While at Kampala University, we toured their very interesting and organized Medical Library. The head librarian (pictured below) was a delightful young man who took great pride in organizing all the books and articles. We also toured their skills lab where the students receive plenty of hands-on practice before going into the clinical setting. The nurses and students who showed us around were proud of their school and so thankful to have us visit. We were so grateful to be there, too!
"As planned, NHTH brought a complete set of manikins—adult, child, and infant, along with all their accessories and supplies—to the school to donate for their skills lab. They did not previously have any CPR manikins and their appreciation was overwhelming! Our time at Kampala University ended with a completely unexpected treat of a special and very beautiful NHTH cake! What a great way to end our time with them!"
For those of you keeping track at home, that's now three beautiful cakes given to our team so far in Uganda. In fifteen years of supporting nurses around the world, we've never been treated to so many amazing desserts!
Now back to Jane:
"After Kampala University, we drove about two hours away from Kampala to Mityana School of Nursing and Midwifery. One of their lead nurses, Peruth, had been in our classes, and we were able to donate a complete set of manikins and accessories there also. We also brought some neonatal care textbooks and resources that we special-ordered for them. Again, we toured the school and enjoyed seeing the skills lab. While we were there, we took some time to demonstrate CPR to some of the staff who had been unable to attend our class."
The NHTH team ended the day by visiting Humble Vessel Clinic, which was started by our Ugandan colleagues and hosts, Charles Kasibante, PA, who is Clinic Director and Dr. David Walulya, the Medical Director. Humble Vessel Clinic serves a very poor area outside of Kampala, providing low cost and free care to the community.
Dr. David, Charles, and their staff of nurses, midwives, and support personnel provide excellent care and bring dignity and hope to their community. We are so grateful to get to work with and support them!
We cannot believe that this trip is over halfway through! Thank you so much for keeping up with the NHTH Team on this first trip to Uganda—we're so grateful to be here and grateful to have you along for the journey!
